Music theory can be taught within the other lessons or as a lesson on its own. For example, some students at area colleges find that they are taking music major and are thrown into a theory class with little experience in chords and scales and the vocabulary of music. They can sign up for a few tutoring sessions to help them with their skills. Composers can study to help them know how to write their music in notation. Students in high school can take this as a credit course with permission of their counselor if it is not available at their building and their district allows.
